U-46 calendar 2026–27: the dates families need first
U-46 families need both the annual calendar and the daily school schedule. The calendar separates preschool’s first day from K–12, identifies high school early-release Wednesdays and gives two conditional June endpoints. The bell schedule supplies the times for a normal school day; it does not replace the special dismissal schedule on an early-release date.
District bell times for 2026–27
U-46 publishes these school-day start and end times in its Unite U-46: Moving Our Schools Forward in 2026–27 information. All elementary schools use 7:55 a.m.–2:15 p.m., while middle schools use 9:05 a.m.–3:41 p.m. High schools retain 7:40 a.m.–2:55 p.m. These are the 2026–27 times, so older school-hour listings may not describe the current routine.
Preschool has three session schedules. Use the one assigned to your child rather than assuming the full-day hours apply to every preschool placement. The table describes instructional start and dismissal, not a bus pickup time or the first moment a building permits arrival. Confirm those arrangements with the school and transportation information.

The 16 high school early-release dates
The 2026–27 annual calendar identifies 16 high school early-release Wednesdays, from September 9 through May 26. They apply to high school students; the label does not make the same date an early dismissal for elementary, middle school or preschool students. It also does not mean every Wednesday follows the shortened schedule.
The annual PDF does not specify an early-release dismissal time. Use your high school’s published special-day bell schedule for pickup and after-school arrangements. The regular 2:55 p.m. high school dismissal in the table above should not be substituted for an unverified early-release time.

Preschool starts a week after K–12
K–12 students begin Thursday, August 27, while preschool begins Thursday, September 3. A family with children in both groups therefore needs a different care plan during the opening week. Preschool session hours also differ, even after both children have started their year.
When saving reminders, include the child’s school or session as well as the date. A shared “school starts” entry can hide the later preschool opening, and a single pickup time can hide the difference between a morning preschool session and an elementary school day.
Thanksgiving is three weekdays off; winter return is January 4
November 25 is a non-attendance day, followed by Thanksgiving recess November 26–27. Students have classes on November 23 and 24, so this is not a full Thanksgiving week away from school. Classes resume Monday, November 30.
Winter recess runs December 21–January 1, with classes resuming Monday, January 4, 2027. January 19 is a later institute day, immediately after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on January 18. Keep that January interruption separate from the winter-return date when arranging care.
Spring recess ends April 2, but students return April 7
The named spring recess is March 29–April 2, 2027. The following Monday, April 5, is a separate Spring Holiday; April 6 is Election Day and an institute day without student classes. Students return Wednesday, April 7. A Monday, April 5 return reminder would therefore be two school days too early.
Including the weekends, the uninterrupted student-off window is March 27–April 6. March 26 is a grading-period endpoint on the calendar, rather than an extra districtwide holiday. The distinction helps families plan the actual time away without changing which dates U-46 calls Spring Recess.
Institute days and grading dates mean different things
Students have no classes for institute days November 2–3, January 19 and February 26, in addition to April 6. These are full-day interruptions, unlike the high school early-release dates. For example, November 11 is listed for high school early release; the district calendar does not turn it into a holiday for all students.
Elementary trimester endpoints include November 24 and March 12. The calendar also marks quarter and semester boundaries for other grade levels. A grading endpoint is not automatically a day off or the date a report card becomes available. Check the attendance entry before booking an appointment that would require missing class.
The June finish depends on emergency-day use
The published last student day is Wednesday, June 9, 2027, if no emergency days are used. The calendar separately gives Wednesday, June 16, if all five are used. Those are two defined scenarios, not a promise that the school year will finish on one fixed date regardless of closures.
The annual calendar does not establish an activation order for every intervening make-up day. Follow the district’s final closing announcement before treating a date between the two endpoints as an attendance day or committing to travel. Do not infer a last-day early dismissal from the separate high school Wednesday pattern.
High school graduations are listed for May 29. Individual schools provide ceremony times and locations. Use the full U-46 calendar linked above for monthly dates, PDF and calendar downloads, and keep the school’s special-day schedule handy for all 16 early-release Wednesdays.
